Dimple Creation

A dimple creation surgery needs an approximate 30 minutes to complete and is carried out under local anesthetic. The surgeon places a punch biopsy instrument alongside the buccal mucosa (inner cheek) and circular motions are made in order to cut through the inner cheek, sub-mucosal and cheek muscle. The circular core that's created is removed; the skin is left unaffected and intact. A shallow cylindrical shaped "defect" is created under the skin; this defect will then be closed with absorbable sutures. The sutures are placed through the cheek muscle, dermis layer of the skin and chick muscle on the side of the "defect". A surgical knot is then tied which dimples the skin without a smile.

Over the first two weeks the sutures will dissolve and the skin flatten out. As the internal scar heals it connects the cheek muscle to the skin to create a dimple when smiling. A dimple creation surgery can be performed on cheeks that are chubby or not, however it is easier to create the dimple on cheeks that are not chubby. If you want a more outstanding dimple, then your surgeon will make a bigger punch biopsy so that a bigger core of soft tissue may be removed.

After the surgery you'll experience minimal swelling, because of the internal scar you will have to rinse your mouth regularly with an oral antiseptic solution.

So how exactly is a dimple surgically created ?

A punch biopsy instrument is placed against the buccal mucosa (inner cheek) and circular motions are made to cut through the mucosa, submucosal fat, and cheek muscle. A circular core composed of these tissues is removed, leaving the skin intact, which will create a shallow cylindrical-shaped defect under the skin.

This 'defect' then is closed by placing an absorbable suture through the cheek muscle on one side of the defect, then through the dermis layer of the skin and finally through the cheek muscle on the othe side of the defect. A surgical knot is tied, which in turn will result in dimpling of the skin even without smiling.

The skin will, however, flatten out in a week or two when the suture is absorbed. The internal scarring which takes place will connect the muscle to the skin, creating a dimple when one smiles.

A natural dimple is usually formed when there is a small defect in the cheek musculature (most often the buccinator muscle). The skin overlying this small defect is stuck down to the underlying connective tissue and creates a dimple in the skin with facial animation (smiling).

Dimple creation surgery can simulate this naturally occurring process. To create a dimple, a small painless incision is made in the inside of your cheek. There is no incision or scar on the outside skin. A small absorbable suture is passed through the inside of the cheek and catches the undersurface of the skin where the dimple is desired. When this suture is tied it causes a dimpling in the overlying skin. At first there is a dimple present even without smiling, but after several days, or sometimes a few weeks, the dimple is only present will smiling or moving the face. The scarring between the inner skin and muscle will cause a permanent dimple even after the suture is absorbed.
