Scar Removal

What are Scars ?
Scar tissue tends to be rather different to the tissue it is repairing or replacing. Usually scar tissue will be tougher or harder, commonly discolored, and hair folicle or sweat glands will not grow back.

Scars are a natural part of your body's healing process. Skin scars usually form after injury, or surgery. They occur when the dermis (the thick layer of skin) is damaged and are a natural way of healing the wound.

Considering a scar removal surgery

A scar surgery is usually done to improve patient appearance (what is considered a cosmetic procedure) or performed to improve the patient functioning (when the scar formation takes influence on the natural movement of muscles, called reconstructive surgery). In any of both cases it is crucial to choose a good surgeon that will guide you through the process.

Nowadays there are several different types of procedures that a plastic surgeon can use in a scar removal surgery to improve and restore your skin. When considering a scar removal surgery it's important to remember that the type of scar you have may require different procedures and the type and number of procedures is one of the major factors that will influence the cost of your scar surgery.

What Causes Scarring ?

The wound-healing process begins with inflammation, progresses to tissue formation and ends with modifying specific factors in the anatomy - such as collagen, the main protein found in connective tissue that supports the skin, bone, cartilage and blood vessels.

Scarring occurs when the wound-healing process is disrupted by certain factors such as too much or too little collagen. For example, a keloid scar is a mass of collagen.

Laser Scar Removal

Today's laser scar removal techniques can reduce the appearance of several types of scars, including : -
  • Keloid Scarring : - Firm, raised and reddish-purple scars that extend beyond the initial wound area and build over time.
  • Hypertrophic Scarring : - Firm, raised and pink scars that remain within the initial wound area and may fade over time.
  • Atrophic Scarring : - Depressed pin-like pockets in the skin that can result from skin conditions or diseases such as acne.

Options for scar revision or scar reduction or scar removal

Serial excision and closure - in one stage or multiple stages, depending upon size, location proximity of scar to important structures and mobility of surrounding skin. the goal of replacement of like tissue with like tissue is achieved best. so for scar removal or scar reduction its always the first consideration. skin in every part of our body is specified and bringing it from a distant area is a compromise rather than a good option for scar removal or scar reduction.

Scar reduction / Scar Revision :- one thing is very clear -- once a scar always a scar, be it bigger or smaller, be it visible or invisible, troublesome or harmless. In scar reduction- we gradually reduce the size of larger scars initially and then finally do cosmetic correction when scar becomes very small. Surgery done is small in magnitude, very safe and does not affect day to day life of patient. final correction takes little time but result of scar correction is always the best.

Skin Grafting :- Partial thickness skin graft:-- thin slice of skin graft is harvested from hidden areas and used as replacement tissue for scar . as skin of different part of body varies so it never acquires character of recipient area and some difference is always there but its a good option in cases where large scarred area needs resurfacing.

Making the Decision For Scar Revision

Whether the surgery is desired for functional or cosmetic reasons, your choice of a facial plastic surgeon is of paramount importance. Your surgeon will examine the scar in order to decide upon the proper treatment and inform you of outcomes that can be expected from facial scar revision surgery.

Different types of scars require different treatments. For example, severe burns that destroy large sections of skin cause the skin to heal in a puckered way. As the skin heals, muscles and tendons may be affected in this "contracting" movement. Keloid scars are a result of the skin's overproduction of collagen after a wound has healed. These scars generally appear as growth in and beyond the scar site. Hypertrophic scars, unlike keloids, do not grow out of the boundaries of the scar area, but because of their thick, raised texture, can be unsightly and may also restrict the natural movement of muscles and tendons.

Some facial scars are unattractive simply because of where they appear on the face, while others affect facial expressions. All surgical possibilities will be discussed in the initial consultation along with risks involved for each type of scarring . The agreement between you and the surgeon on how to proceed is a prerequisite for successful surgery. After you decide to proceed with scar revision, he will inform about the anesthesia, the surgical facility, any secondary surgeon, options and costs.

Because scars are highly individualistic and the patient's attitude towards scar is personal, maximum improvement in facial scars may require more than one procedure, and more than one technique may be employed.
