A tattoo is a marking made by inserting indelible ink into the dermis layer of the skin to change the pigment for decorative or other reasons. Tattoos on humans are a type of decorative body modification, while tattoos on animals are most commonly used for identification or branding. The term "tattoo" or from Tahiti, "Tatau" is first referenced by Joseph Banks, the naturalist aboard Cook's ship the "Endeavour" in 1769 where he mentions it in his journal. To paraphrase. he states, "I shall now mention the way they mark themselves indelibly, each of them is so marked by their humor or disposition".
How are tattoos removed ?
Medical lasers use an intense beam of light to significantly lighten or completely remove your tattoo. When the ink particles of your tattoo absorb the light from the laser, they are broken up into tiny fragments. These fragments are then absorbed through your body's natural cleansing mechanism. This cleansing process generally takes a few weeks. Larger ink particles may require multiple treatments.
Tattoo removal by Infrared Coagulation uses infrared light to burn the skin layer that contains the tattoo's ink. The treated area scabs over. After several days, the scab falls off taking the ink with it.
How does the laser remove my tattoo ?
The word LASER is an acronym meaning Light Amplification by the Stimulated Emission of Radiation. Medical lasers use an intense beam of light to significantly lighten or completely remove your tattoo, without harming the surrounding healthy cells. The light energy may be delivered as a continuous wave of light or in pulses, depending on the treatment and the type of laser used. When the ink particles of your tattoo absorb the light from the laser, they are broken up into tiny fragments. These fragments are then absorbed through your body's natural cleansing mechanism. This cleansing process generally takes a few weeks. Larger ink particles may require multiple treatments.
What are the treatments like ?
Some patients say they feel a slight sting, like the snap of a rubber band on the skin, followed by the feeling of sunburn. Many treatments do not require anesthetics. However, some patients feel more comfortable with a local numbing agent like ice or an anesthetic cream. For others, a local anesthetic injection may be beneficial.
Your Options In Tattoo Removal
There are several options for tattoo removal, however not all physician's offices will offer each one. Please discuss this before you consult or make an appointment to discuss your options for more information on what is available in your area.
Laser Removal : - Laser removal is the penetration and break up of the ink articles that were implanted into your skin. This procedure essentially speeds up your body's natural process of ridding your body of the foreign object that is ink. This procedure uses various types of lasers or intense pulsed light therapy machines depending upon the color of the ink. This procedure once took an average about 2 years to fully remove a tattoo and even then it was not guaranteed. Although modern lasers and light systems can remove it in less time, this process is entirely dependent upon the laser type, number of sessions and the patient's body's ability to rid it self of the ink. This procedure is performed under a topical anesthetic, or with none at all. See our Laser Resurfacing Section For more information.
Intense Pulsed Light : - The same concept as above however Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is utilized. IPL was pioneered by Dr. Patrick Bitter Jr. and is based on emitting high intensity pulses of light (not lasers) to penetrate the skin and rid you of various complaints. There are different machines for different levels or types of penetration. This procedure is performed under a topical anesthetic, or with none at all. See our Intense Pulsed Light section for more information.
Excision : - This method also leaves a scar but is suitable for smaller tattoos - the results are immediate and the treatment generally inexpensive. The tattoo it literally cut out of your skin and the wound sutured. It is relatively simple and has a mild recovery phase if no infections or other complications arise. This procedure is performed under local anesthetic, depending upon the size.
Salibrasion : - This is a very old method of abrasion where the treatment area is literally rubbed with salt. This procedure is probably one of the oldest resurfacing techniques known. This procedure is performed under local anesthetic.
Saline Injections : - Injections can be given to help break up a tattoo - this usually does not remove the tattoo but they can blurry it significantly. Some tattoo artists suggest this if the area will be getting a "cover up" anyway. This helps blur and fade the old tattoo to make way for a customized cover up tattoo.
Laser tattoo removal breaks up of ink under the skin. Different lasers are used depending on the color of ink in the tattoo. The laser blast lasts micro-seconds and takes out the colored pigment. It takes approximately 200 laser bursts to remove a small tattoo. During the tattoo removal, the tattoo area is numbed; the first treatment for tattoo removal is usually fairly mild, with following treatments of a more intense value. Laser tattoo removal works in a similar way as laser skin resurfacing.
Small tattoos can be removed by an incision tattoo removal method. This involves having the tattoo surgically removed and the place where the tattoo was imprinted sutured up - basically the tattoo is cut out. This method leaves scarring but results are instant and this is the cheapest procedure for tattoo removal. A numbing agent is used and mild dermabrasion is used to prime the are before the tattoo removal.
