Egg donation is the process by which a woman provides one or several eggs (ova, oocytes) for purposes of assisted reproduction or biomedical research. For assisted reproduction purposes, egg donation involves the process of in vitro fertilization as the eggs are fertilized in the laboratory. After the eggs have been obtained, the role of the egg donor is complete. Egg donation is part of the process of third party reproduction as part of ART (Assisted Reproductive Technology).
Healthy women between the ages of 21 and 29 who are non-smokers and can provide personal and medical information, as well as family health history, are considered optimal as egg donors. Women who donate feel tremendous gratification and are able to do many things with the financial rewards given to them for performing their Donor responsibilities.
What Does Egg Donation Involve?
The egg donor have several medical visits before she are accepted. These visits will include a physical and gynecological exam, a medical and family history, blood and urine tests, and a psychological evaluation. A donation will not occur unless she is accepted, matched with a woman who will receive your eggs, and gives her consent.
Using donated eggs to establish a pregnancy involves in vitro fertilization (IVF). First, she takes a series of fertility drugs (some of which must be injected) to stimulate her ovaries to produce many eggs at one time. While using the drugs, she has frequent medical tests. Removing the eggs from your ovaries involves a minor surgical procedure. After she recovers from egg retrieval, your part of the treatment cycle is finished.
Her eggs will then be mixed with sperm from the intended father in the clinic's laboratory. If embryos result, they will be grown in a lab dish before one or more are transferred into the uterus of the recipient. If she becomes pregnant and delivers a child, she will be the birth mother and legal mother of that child even though the child will be genetically related to you.
