Embryo Donation Treatment in india

Embryo donation is a form of third party reproduction. In vitro fertilisation, or IVF, often results in a number of frozen, unused embryos after the woman for whom they were originally created has successfully carried one or more pregnancies to term. In embryo donation, these extra embryos are given to other couples or women for transfer with the goal of producing a successful pregnancy. The resulting child is considered the child of the woman who carries it and gives birth, and not the child of the donor, the same as occurs with egg donation or sperm donation.

Typically, genetic parents donate the eggs to a fertility clinic or "embryo bank" where they are cryogenically preserved until a carrier is found for them. Typically the process of matching the embryo(s) with the prospective parents is conducted by the agency itself, at which time the clinic transfers ownership of the embryos to the prospective parents.

What is Embryo Donation?

This procedure is similar to egg donation. However, instead of borrowing the egg and using the recipient’s husband's sperm for fertilization, both the egg and the sperms are derived from donors.

Who can opt for embryo donation?

All the patients who are eligible for egg donation can also be eligible for embryo donation. In egg donation, there are the problems of getting patients to donate their eggs. Furthermore it is a relatively costly procedure, as compared to embryo donation. Hence if the couple has no objection in using donor sperm, it is a preferred method of choice.

What is it?

Egg and embryo donation are forms of fertility treatment which can help couples who, in the past, would have been considered unable to conceive.

With egg donation, eggs from a donor are fertilized with the male partner’s sperm in a laboratory dish, and the resulting embryos are transferred to the female partner’s uterus.

Who might benefit?

Women who have no ovaries or do not produce any eggs need donated eggs or embryos to conceive. A woman can find herself in this situation because of premature menopause, an inherited condition, surgery, or treatment for cancer using chemotherapy or radiotherapy.

Women in their forties have a low chance of success with assisted conception treatments using their own eggs because egg quality declines with age. Using donated eggs is also an option sometimes taken up by older women.

If other treatments such as IVF have been unsuccessful, some couples decide to pursue egg or embryo donation. Women who have recurrent miscarriages also sometimes also opt for a donor conception; including women with Turner's syndrome who also run a high risk of carrying a child with a genetic disorder.

To whom embryo donation is advised?

Ans. There are selected groups of patients to whom embryo donation is recommended: -

  • When both the partners are infertile
  • Couples who are at a high risk of passing on genetic disorders to their offspring.
  • Women with recurrent IVF failures’
