Hydrocele Operation

What is a Hydrocele Operation?

A hydrocele operation is a surgical health care procedure performed on adult males to treat the presence of a hydrocele in the body.  A hydrocele is a pocket of watery liquid that grows around the testicles.  The liquid accumulates because it cannot drain itself into the circulation system naturally.  This condition can also exist in younger males, but the causes and treatments are slightly different.

Tests and Diagnosis

Screening and diagnosis entails a physical exam, which may reveal an enlarged scrotum that isn't tender to the touch. Pressure to the abdomen or scrotum may enlarge or shrink the fluid-filled sac, which may indicate an associated inguinal hernia.

Because the fluid in a hydrocele usually is clear, your doctor may shine a light through the scrotum (transillumination). With a hydrocele, the light will outline the testicle, indicating that clear fluid surrounds it.

If your doctor suspects your hydrocele is caused by inflammation, blood and urine tests may help determine whether you have an infection, such as epididymitis.

  • Ultrasound imaging : - This test, which uses high-frequency sound waves to create images of structures inside your body, may be used to rule out a testicular tumor or other cause of scrotal swelling.

  • Abdominal X-ray: - A basic X-ray uses electromagnetic radiation to make images of your bones, teeth and internal organs. An X-ray may distinguish a hydrocele from an inguinal hernia.

The operation

Most patients have a general anaesthetic so that they are asleep during the operation.

Sometimes the operation can be done by an injection of local anaesthetic in the back which will numb the area from the waist down. If this is the case, you will feel that something is happening in the area of the operation, but will feel no pain.

A cut is made into the skin over the hydrocele. The liquid is emptied out. Some of it will be checked for the possible presence of bugs and some of it in order to exclude the presence of cancerous cells. The testicle is examined. If it is all right, the double coverings of the testicle are stitched up to stop the liquid building up again.

If the testicle is diseased, it may be necessary to remove it. This will be discussed with you before the operation.

Finally, the skin is stitched up with stitches that melt away and drop off by themselves.

The operation is usually done as a day case. This means that you come into hospital on the day of the operation and go home the same day.

You may need to stay in for a day or two, if you are over 50, having trouble passing urine, have other illnesses, you are heavily affected by the general anaesthetic or if you cannot manage at home.

Complications

A hydrocele typically isn't dangerous and usually doesn't affect fertility. However, it may be associated with an underlying testicular condition that may cause serious complications : -

  • Infection or tumor : - Either may impair sperm production or function.

  • Inguinal hernia : - A loop of intestine could become trapped in the weak point in the abdominal wall (strangulated), a life-threatening condition.
