Arthritis of the hip joint is a common problem in India and the Western world. It occurs due to damage to the hip joint from various conditions such as Primary Osteoarthritis, Avascular Necrosis (death of bone due to lack of blood supply), Trauma or Injury (previous hip fractures), Infection, Rheumatoid arthritis, Ankylosing Spondylitis and other diseases. It causes severe pain, stiffness, deformity, decreased mobility and severe disability. In India, hip joint arthritis affects even the younger population who are barely 20 or 30 years of age. This can lead to disruption of family and social life, inability to work for a living and difficulty in moving about.
Hip arthritis is treated with Total Hip Replacement Surgery when the symptoms or the arthritis cannot be controlled with medications. Hip replacements are successful procedures.
Hip joint replacement is surgery to replace all or part of the hip joint with an artificial joint. The artificial joint is called a prosthesis.
The most common reason to have a hip joint replaced is to provide relief for severe arthritis pain that is limiting what a person is able to do. Hip joint replacement is usually done in people age 60 and older. Younger people who have a hip replaced may put extra strain on the artificial hip. That strain can cause it to wear out, and part or all of it may need to be replaced again if that happens.
Hip resurfacing arthroplasty is a type of hip replacement that replaces the arthritic surface of the joint but removes far less bone than the traditional total hip replacement. Because the hip resurfacing removes less bone, it may be preferable for younger patients that are expected to need a second, or revision, hip replacement surgery as they grow older and wear out the original artificial hip replacement.
Total hip arthroplasty (THA) also called as total hip replacement (THR) is a surgical procedure to reconstruct the arthritic or destructed hip joint using artificial prostheses. This surgical treatment is performed on people who are suffering from severe hip pain, walking disability, disabling joint stiffness and reduced activity of daily living. The head and neck of the femur (thigh bone) and the inner surface of acetabulum (hip socket) are resected or trimmed and replaced with total hip prosthesis.
Anatomy
The hip joint is one of the true ball-and-socket joints of the body. The hip socket is called the acetabulum and forms a deep cup that surrounds the ball of the upper thighbone, known as the femoral head. Hip resurfacing may only affect the head of the femur or it may involve both the femoral head and the hip socket.
The most common complication after total hip arthroplasty nowadays is the formation of blood clots in the deep thigh vein near the surgery site. This is called deep vein thrombosis or thrombophlebitis. When this occurs your affected limp swells and it may hurt. The clots have the risk of traveling through the vein and may cause pulmonary infarction when they reach lung.
