Endoscopy
An endoscopy allows the doctor to look inside the esophagus (swallowing tube), stomach and upper small intestine. These are the upper portions of the digestive system. Your child's doctor will use a small flexible tube, starting at the mouth, to see inside the body. Your child's doctor will likely do a biopsy during the endoscopy. During a biopsy a small amount of tissue is taken from the lining of the digestive system. The tissue can be studied closely to help determine your child's diagnosis and the best treatment for your child.
Endoscopy means looking inside and typically refers to looking inside the body for medical reasons using an endoscope an instrument used to examine the interior of a hollow organ or cavity of the body. Unlike most other medical imaging devices, endoscopes are inserted directly into the organ. Endoscopy can also refer to using a borescope in technical situations where direct line-of-sight observation is not feasible.
Endoscopic Craniosynostosis Repair
Endoscopic craniosynostosis repair is a procedure offered at We Care health Services for patients diagnosed with some types of craniosynostosis. This innovative treatment offers many advantages to the patient and family over open craniosynostosis, including significantly shorter recovery time, smaller scars, less discomfort and swelling, and shorter hospitalizations.
Craniosynostosis is the premature fusion of one or more of the joints between the bone plates of the skull. The most frequent type of fusion is called sagittal synostosis. This premature fusion causes problems with normal brain and skull growth. Further, it increases pressure inside the head, and causes the skull or facial bones to become abnormally shaped.
The advantages to endoscopic surgery are many. The surgery has less blood loss than the traditional repair and, in many cases, prevents the need for blood transfusion during the surgery. The endoscopic technique also results in less postoperative swelling, decreases operative time, and decreases hospital stay by several days. Patients are usually released 24 hours after surgery. Postoperative pain is also significantly reduced by this operation. The other advantage to endoscopic surgery is that there are no internal screws or plates that are required to hold the bone in place after surgery. This decreases the risk of plate induced pain, infection, swelling, or allergic reaction in your child.
Typically, endoscopic surgery involves inserting a tiny endoscopic telescope into the body. The telescope, usually five to 10 millimeters in diameter, features an attached video camera. Using this tube-like instrument, surgeons are able to make small, hidden incisions and using scissor instruments able to cut and remove the fused suture.
By using endoscopic surgical techniques, surgeons are able to minimize the size of the incision, (usually about an inch in length) thereby decreasing morbidity, recovery time and scarring for the patient.
These results strongly indicate that pediatric endoscopic surgery will soon become the standard treatment for a variety of pediatric disorders, both aesthetic and reconstructive in nature.
 
Pediatric Outpatient Endoscopy
Unexplained symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, constipation or pain in a child may require an internal examination. This can be done by using an endoscope, a small flexible tube with a camera on the end that is passed through the mouth or rectum.
What to Expect
An endoscopy procedure is done as an outpatient at the hospital. A child cannot eat or drink anything for 8 hours prior to the procedure. An infant may be able to have formula up to 5 hours before the exam depending on their age. The doctor will specify what time the child must stop eating or drinking.
If the doctor is examining the colon, he may give you instructions for how to cleanse the colon the day before the procedure. It is very important that these instructions be followed so that the colon is clean for the exam. If there is any problem with the child taking all of the laxative prescribed, please let your doctor know.
After being admitted to the hospital, the patient will change into a hospital gown. A nurse will ask some questions and explain everything. Sometimes the patient will get some medicine by mouth to help relax him. The nurse may also start an I.V. by inserting a tiny catheter into the patient’s vein.
